In Piniella We Guessiella?? Contest

As announced on today’s show, recently we received an e-mail from loyal Cubscast listener Brian R., who shared with us his idea for a brand new Cubscast contest:

Why not have a contest to see who can guess the first game that Lou Pinella gets thrown out as Cubs manager? You know it’s gonna happen. As Cub fans, we all know how frustrating watching this team can become, so why not cheer it on? The only question is when will he get thrown out of a game for the first time this season. You can make it interesting with extra credit for guessing which base will he pick up and throw. Prize package? How about some of those great Cubscast T-Shirts? - Brian R.

We thought Brian’s idea was great, and so we are now accepting entries to this contest based on these guidelines:

  1. Limit one guess per person (if we find out you guessed more than once you’ll be disqualified)
  2. You may guess one specific day from now until the end of the 2007 postseason
  3. To enter, simply click on “Add Yours!” below and add your entry using this format - “MM/DD/YY - 2nd base” along with any additional thoughts you have on the contest or even the reason you decided to choose that specific date
  4. Multiple entries that guess the same day are not allowed. This contest is basically “first-come, first serve” in terms of the available days.

Those are the only guidelines for this contest.

The winner will receive a 3-pack of Cubscast shirts from the Cubscast Store. We’ll add additional prizes to this contest each month of the season if Lou Piniella continues to keep his cool.

Contest ends on the date that Cubs Manager Lou Piniella gets ejected from a game during the 2007 season and/or postseason. If for some strange reason Sweet Lou is not ejected from a game the entire year, we’ll compile all the entries and will choose a winner by random drawing. Winner will be announced ‘live’ on the Monday podcast following Lou Piniella’s first ejection.

Thanks again to Brian R. for the idea, and to everyone for participating. Good luck!

04/23/07-1st base. I chose this date because it is my friends birthday and he couldn’t possibly have a better present than Sweet Lou gettin’ sour. I also think he might get dirt on home plate.

Oh, BTW, does it need to be an exact date or will it be whoever is closest?

Good question, Jack. It’ll be whoever is closest WITHOUT going over. Like the Showcase Showdown on Price is Right. That is the only example we could come up with, sadly. - The CSN/Cubscast Crew

Darin April 2nd at 5:27 pm

5/6/07 - 3rd Base. I think he can make it through the first month but once May rolls around he gets thrown out. I chose third base because it is the closest base to the Cubs dugout as they will be playing the Nationals at home on this date.

AndyW April 2nd at 8:41 pm

6/17/07 - No base - instead, in the heat of the moment, on a clear but overly humid Sunday afternoon down 4-1 against the Padres, and icronically the first start of Mark Prior’s 2007 season, Sweet Lou will lose it arguing balls and strikes and actually remove his right cleat and stirup, and throw them into the stands.

In an act of defiance against MLB and the suspension levied he chooses to manage one cleated the rest of the season.

Roger April 2nd at 9:02 pm

4/22/07 - 1st Base

Lou grows tired of the Cardinals crying about stolen signs and the 1st base ump pushes him over the edge. On the way back, both managers end up arguing at home plate, Lou punches LaRussa in the face.

Zach April 2nd at 9:12 pm

4/28/07- first base

Game in st. louis, on fox, joe buck most likey announcing, have that feeling

Kelly April 2nd at 9:17 pm

04/20/07 3rd Base…I would say second, but that’s a long walk.

Kari April 2nd at 11:06 pm

8/3/07 -3rd Base
I think he will make it past the all-star break, maybe…

Brian McGuckin April 3rd at 3:11 am

6-29-07 home against milwaukee, no base

05/19/07
At about the 3rd inning after Ozzie has his starter “accidentally” tag Derek in the arm again. And for Ozzie not parking his car where he wanted it.

Steve W April 3rd at 12:11 pm

06/06/07 - no base

No base toss, he’ll just destroy the gatorade cooler.

Jason April 3rd at 12:12 pm

7/26/07 - 2nd base. Last game of a hot ‘n muggy series in St. Louis. In the thick of a tight division race, Sweet Lou’s patience will run thin.

I have a personal wager that will be go down exactly like this:

Cubs will be down 3-1 in the top of the 6th when Soriano is called out at 2nd on an attempted steal. Piniella will be thrown out after throwing second base out to shallow center field. Following that, Aram will initiate the comeback with a 421-foot two-run homer and Cubs win 4-3.

If it doesn’t happen exactly like that, I’ll eat 24 blazin’ Buffalo Wild Wings. And if it does, I’ll eat 24 blazin’ wings live on Cubscast (if I’m invited, of course… do they have BW3’s in Chicago?).

Only downside to this is I might die shorly thereafter without seeing the World Series win.

06/23/07

At the White Sox…Not to be outdone by Ozzie’s ejection the night before, Lou storms out of the dugout after the first pitch of the game, tosses third base further than Prior or Wood would ever throw a baseball.

Jon April 3rd at 2:27 pm

05/02/07 - No Base

Something about this month makes everyone go a little crazy. Maybe because its so close to summer.

Stevo April 3rd at 5:25 pm

4/27/07 - 1st base

at the Cardinals…. his reaction to all the red in the stands will be similar to a bull.

Tim April 3rd at 5:56 pm

5/17/07 - First base - The weather’s getting hot and the pressure’s been building: inept performances against the Pirates and Nationals (hey, if you are a pessimist you never get disappointed), back in New York in the media spotlight, series coming up against the Sox… one too many bad calls by the home plate umpire, the noise of one too many low flying planes screaming in his head… Lou tries to take out both the umpire and the plane with one throw of the base bag.

Jennifer April 3rd at 6:00 pm

05/28/07 - All the bases
He just dosen’t seem like a “Monday” kinda guy - that and I really want cubs fans to pull together and really start hating the marlins more.

Brian Robinson April 3rd at 9:02 pm

7/30/07 - 1st Base
People, you are missing a major factor in the Lou equation. FULL MOON SCHEDULE! Evening game on national TV at home against the Phillies… FULL MOON. Things should get real nutty.

Sarah April 4th at 2:09 am

4/21/07 - home plate

yepp. second cards/cubs game!

Patrick April 4th at 9:48 am

4/17/07 - No Base

I doesn’t take long for Lou to lose his cool with one of his own players. Ramirez with a 3-2 count hits a lazy fly ball to left field. He proceeds to trot slowly out of the batters box towards first base. Piniella darts out of the dugout, grabs the bat out of Jacque Jones hands and heads full steam towards Ramirez. The scene is reminiscent of Wile E. Coyote trying to catch the Road Runner. Piniella serves a five game suspension and issues an emotional apology to the media with Darren Baker on his lap.

Riley S. April 4th at 5:25 pm

7-28-07- 3rd base
I picked this day cause I’ll be at the game and he can last past the All Star Break.
I believe it will be 3rd base baecause it is closest to the bench and more accesable for him to throw so he wont have to be in the heat for long.

Steve Ryan April 4th at 7:45 pm

04/08/07 - Home Plate

I pickthis day because it would be the end of the first week.

Later,
Steve

Darrell Raasch April 4th at 9:10 pm

07/15/07 - Home Plate

Cubs up one on the Astros. Zambrano and Oswalt in a pitchers duel. Top of the seventh, man on first, two outs, 3-2 count. Very close pitch called ball four. Lance Berkman comes up and blasts a home run on the first pitch. Piniella yells with the home plate umpire and is thrown out. Before he leaves he will kick dirt all over home plate. The home plate umpire refuses to clean off home plate, so he gives his brush to Michael Barrett so he can clean it himself (my favorite Piniella tantrum ever).

Jake J April 4th at 9:50 pm

5-18-07 - No Base
First White Sox game. Lou is ejected after assaulting Ozzie Guillen when Lou finds out that Ozzie scratched his car during his stint as a valet attendant.

Boog April 4th at 9:53 pm

06/17/07 - The Rubber

The Chicago temperatures are heating up as the team is cooling down. It is Wood’s first game of the season. He is brought into the game in the 8th with the game tied and bases loaded. Wood is immediately called for a balk for not taking his foot of the rubber. Lou blows up and tries to remove the evidence.

After Lou is ejected from the game and the mound repaired, Wood sprains his ankle on a new pit in the mound and returns to the DL.

Wood does return later in the year to appear in two more games before a freak frisbee accident sends him back on the DL.

08/18/2007

Late season home series against Cards.

Matt W-B April 5th at 10:06 am

08/05/07 - Somewhere between the third base line and the mound. Aramis may end up as collateral damage.

The hot August heat, the detestable Mets, the day *after* a nationally televised game: it’s ripe.

Caveat - after having seen the chewing he gave Dempster last night, this may be ridiculously late, but it’s a gamble for a ridiculous prize pack, right? In Strode We Trust.

Jack April 5th at 5:38 pm

Dear Darrell Raasch, Jake J, and Boog, you can not throw the rubber or home plate. It’s IN the ground.
Not on it like 1st, 2nd, and 3rd base.

JP Peters April 5th at 9:56 pm

7/21/07 - Its a quick pick, but I think he’ll be overdue by now it he doesn’t sooner. How? no idea. Play at the plate…

BarbarosGhost April 6th at 6:39 am

5-25-07 3rd Base. vs LA Dodgers. After a long day and almost a midnight start to the game, Pinella’s wearing thin. 9th inning, Cubs up by 1. Dodgers have runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs. Jeff Kent hits the world’s highest pop fly to 3rd base. ARam, Izturis, and Murton all collide together and the ball bounces of of ARams forehead. Dodgers win. Pinella comes out of the dugout and begins beating all 3 players with 3rd base. The only audible words from Pinella is “what the heck is so hard about calling the ball in the air?!” MLB suspends him for 3 games.

The honeymoon will take Lou through April with all the pleasantries. Come May, the gloves will come off and Lou may see fit to make some noise. I want to think that the warm and fuzzy environment of Philly sets the tone. Friday, May 11 will hopefully bare fruit.

PokeJoey April 6th at 3:04 pm

9/27/07 - 3rd Base

This will be the only Cubs game I will see, so I have to hope he will blow up then.

John Franz April 6th at 3:15 pm

04/13/07

i think lou will blow up next week at home friday april 13th. its friday the 13th what would be better than for lou to blow up and get tossed on friday the 13th. and they are playing the reds and its not the cardinals but there is a little rivalry with them. so that is my pick! go cubs

Barb April 6th at 3:28 pm

04/20/07

I predict that Lou will display his disappointment over a call from blue. The bleacher bums will wholeheartedly agree with the new manager and be sure he hears them. This of course, will ignite Lou to continue his display perhaps kicking the dirt, throwing a base or two, and sharing a word or two or an earful to enlighten the umpires knowledge of the game. When do I think this is going to happen? Friday, April 20th against St. Louis at Wrigley Field. Can’t wait to tune in.

Eric T. April 6th at 5:58 pm

4/15/2007

It’ll be right after another ninth inning Dumpster walk….

Kyle K. April 7th at 8:45 am

6/25/07 - Second Base

After managing to keep his cool at U.S. Cellular Field despite Ozzie’s on-field antics and post-game jabs at Soriano, Sweet Lou finally snapped when returning to Wrigley to face the Rockies. The boiling point is reached when Dempster walks the first batter he sees in the Ninth Inning and he’s ejected for the actions taken on his OWN player. He does not so much throw Second Base as it comes out in the ensuing altercation with the Umpire.

yeah…I think he’s just gonna let it fly sooner than later…

07/16/07

after calling for Carlos Zambrano(hopefully Carlos Marmol is safe and sound in AAA) to intentionally hit Barry Bonds, Lou is ejected. He leaves politely, knowing that he has done Henry Aaron and the game of baseball a small bit of justice.

P.S. Great show guys, keep it up.

Jim R April 10th at 11:30 am

6/24/07 - Before first pitch. After Ozzie has another one of thugs/minions/coaches “accidently” hit Zambrano in the pitching arm with a fungo, again, Lou will go will finally snap at Ozzie’s Tony Montana tactics. No bases will be harmed in this tirade, but Lou’s cap will be retired.

Tim Ricks April 12th at 9:10 am

05/16/07 - 2nd base

By this time I think Sweet Lou will feel the need to fire up his players with some enthusiastic dissention!

Sarah April 12th at 12:48 pm

5/4/07-Third base

What better way to start the weekend?

Ben April 13th at 1:05 am

6/04/07 Miller Brewery

In a feat of superpiniellian strength he will uproot the Miller Brewery building in order to drown the brewers in Milwaukee’s Best Lite. On a related note, the people of Japan will demand that Major League Baseball abandon any plans to hold future games there for fear of a giant Lou Piniella destroying Tokyo.

Matt Eshelman April 13th at 2:13 pm

4/22/07 3rd Base. It’ll end up being the rubber match of the first meeting with the Cardinals and, due to a frustrating April, Lou’s gonna lose it on a bad call at third.

Beth Peloquin April 14th at 5:17 pm

4/25/07 third base. I am taking my 6 year old niece to her first Cubs’ game on this date. I am rooting for Lou to make it a very memorable game for us.

Ryne Dougherty April 15th at 2:24 pm

May 12, 2007- In Phillie, where the smell of pee that lingers from the vet forces Lou in a fume at the home plate umpire.

Jon McClintock April 15th at 6:21 pm

4/18/07 No bases. Just dirt kicking.

Kevin Jaquet April 16th at 9:57 pm

4/29/2007 @ St. Louis from the dugout on ESPN.

I’m afraid to say not only is it coming sooner rather than later, but it won’t even be Sweet Lou’s doing.

Judging by the schedule right now, Big Z throws Sunday night, 4/29, in St. Louis. After giving up a 3-run jack to Pujols in the 1st, Zambrano plunks the chump hitting 4th for the birds, so a warning is issued.

In the 3rd inning, Z has lost his mind and hits Pujols, causing not only Zambrano but also Sweet Lou to spend the rest of ESPN’s broadcast dangling his feet in the Mighty Muddy Mississippi River, a la Tom Sawyer. Pretty crappy way to end up with your first ejection of the year, but that’s it.

Debbie B. April 17th at 7:53 pm

06/30/07

3rd base
If it is a hot day and the Cubs are losing, he’ll take 3rd base with him to throw at the reporters who ask stupid questions during the post game!!

Andy April 20th at 12:47 pm

05/18/07
3rd base

First game of the year against the White Sox. Tensions will be high.

Scott Borst April 23rd at 9:58 am

07/14/07 - Third
It’s the only game I can be at in person. Coming up from Georgia to see Lou blow his top.

Tim Briscoe April 25th at 12:02 pm

06/03/07 (vs. Atlanta)

With the way they’re playing, I think it’ll be sooner rather than later.

06/02/07

Sweet Lou wil be ejected on 06-02-07 for the first time this season. This will not be the only time this year. GO CUBS!!!!!

6/12/07 - After frustrations of just being swept by the Brewers and Braves in back-to-back road series - With dirt kicked all over home plate, Lou will be ejected during the first game in front of his former team - the Seattle Mariners.
