Mid-May…or possibly June

As Cubs fans we’re all too familiar with these articles (thanks to Ryan from FL for forwarding it). To Paraphrase the article— “Mark Prior is feeling great, no pain, blah-blah-blah, and expect him back in mid-May…or possibly June.”

Prior doing what he does best

Right. Believe it when we see it.

But that little bit of cynicism aside, part of me has always felt Prior would flourish again once he left the Cubs, and not for anything the Cubs did to him, but because that’s how things go. Salt in the wounds is part of being a Cub fan. But after reading the following last line of the above article, I think I’ve completely come to terms with the Prior departure:

(Prior) said he was encouraged when he began playing long toss beyond 80 feet during January workouts at Petco Park, a feat he hadn’t performed in two offseasons.

So the Cubs paid him $3.65 million in ’06 and $3.575 million in ’07, and he couldn’t even play long toss beyond 80 feet in either offseason? The same offseasons were he was near-arbitration both times and voided the final year of his original contract? Not to blame him for all the money the Cubs threw away here, he’s gotta get his I guess, but I’m fairly certain I can play long toss with accuracy up to maybe 90 feet. So Jim, if you’re reading this, give me a call…

Ok, I found someone who shares the same fear I have. Prior is going to ROCK the NL West, and he will sting us in at least one game this year. Is this the real curse of the Cubs… that we are the Farm System for the rest of the Major Leagues? I think the Cubs did the right thing by letting him go, though…. He would have sucked for us if he stayed in Chicago!
