Ask Len Kasper, Cubs Play-By-Play Man

Len Kasper, Cubs Play-By-Play Man and Resident Rocker

Sheps and I are happy to announce today that one of the special guests for our 500th episode will be Len Kasper, the excellent Cubs play-by-play broadcaster. We thought for roughly 5 seconds about who we’d most like to interview for this landmark episode and Len was the first person that both Sheps and I thought of.

We interviewed Len in the aftermath of the 2006 Cubs season, and it is one of my favorite episodes we’ve ever done. If there’s anything we’ve discovered from recording 497 episodes of Cubscast, it’s that there are few things more fun than discussing the highs and lows of the Cubs with people that care about the team. Both Len and his broadcast partner Bob Brenly have a genuine love for baseball and the Cubs, and it shows in the quality of their coverage each and every day.

So anyway, we’ve been compiling some questions for Len but we need your help! Please e-mail your questions to hosts@cubscast.com or add a comment to this post. The last time we interviewed Len he made it clear that no topic was off-limits, so if there’s something you’ve been eager to ask this is a great opportunity.

Our 500th episode will be available for download on Opening Day, April 6th! Tune in and tell your friends as we’ll also be previewing the upcoming season with a certain former co-host, as well as announcing a “technological breakthrough” that tech savvy Cubs fans are going to love.

Len and Bob both seem big into music — I’d like to know more about some of their favorite bands and maybe some of the players’ favorite bands and musicians.

Hi guys, love the new website design. Thanks for the “Waiting for a miracle” mp3. Hey, can you ask Len if the video podcast is coming back.

Thanks,
Lon

Len, be honest, if you really concentrate can you still smell the faintest aroma of Old Style and Cigar smoke in the WGN TV press box?

Hey Len and Bob, a question for Bob the catcher. If a pitcher is throwing 90 miles per hour and the batter fouls the ball straight back on your mask, is the ball still going 90 miles per hour or is is sped up? Thanks Moondog

As both of you know, Soriano is a waste in the out field. He is just taking up air. As I write this, he hits a home run. But is it worth it? He can not play the outfield. he looks like he does not want to be out there. And let me tell you, it is tuff living here in Milwaukee and being a Cubs fan. So my question is simple. WHY is Soriano still out there? Spend the money on someone who wants to be there.

Tonight, 8-31-09, Len said he didn’t get why Giovany Soto was having such a bad year after such a great one. It’s really simple psychology. Same thing happened to Wood and Pryor, only not as quickly. They do great the first year because they really WANT to. The next year they start to think they HAVE TO do what they did last year or maybe even better. As soon as you go from WANTing to do well to thinking you HAVE TO it creates unnecessary stress that starts to snowball into impairing your performance and often results in injury. Everyone make a host of cognitive choices all the time that determine how they feel, like what they focus on, what they compare things to, etc. Starting to think you HAVE TO do something causes someone to start to make these in ways that causes everything to spiral negatively psychologically. Injuries can inadvertently serve a purpose in that they temporarily relieve the stress by lowering expectations for a while. Just think of all the HAVE TOs Wood and Pryor might have had in their heads when they took the mound. Zambrano is in the same boat right now.

People always say the Cubs have the best fans in the world. I’ve always said that’s part of the problem. When you know the history of the Cubs, and every day there’s 40K+ supportive fans in the stands, you not only WANT to win, and win for them, but start to think you HAVE TO, and the stress starts to mount and they’re playing wound tight while other teams are playing loose. Just look at last year’s playoff with LA. There’s ways to fix it, and I’ve offered to help, but they probably think I’m a crackpot. I taught cognitive therapy for 33 years.

Tuesday night Dan Harin of the D’Backs went 4 for 4 at the plate. My question — Who was the last starting pitcher to go 4 for 4 at the plate.
