Greeting from Cubscast!
This is Sheps, one-third of the trifecta that makes up Cubscast.com, the world's first podcast dedicated to the Chicago Cubs, their wonderful fans, and of course the talented (and physically attractive members) of their Media Relations department. If you're not yet aware of Cubscast, then you should feel shame today, as we have been lucky enough to be featured in articles in The Chicago Tribune and RedEye newspapers. But in case you missed them, here's the scoop:
Now for the heart of why I'm writing you today... We at Cubscast have begun a quest to sing the 7th inning stretch at Wrigley Field. If you have yet to hit "delete" to this email and send it (along with our hopes and dreams) into your recycling bins- thanks. And now, let me tell you about a very sick little boy named Lou, and his one dream in this world...
Kidding! We are actually 3 relatively healthy lads from the Chicago area (though two of us now live in Los Angeles), who hope to the sing the 7th inning stretch, not simply to impress friends and family members who wrote us off years ago, but also because we think Cubs fans out there will like hearing us sing and interviewed, and finding out about our service. Here is a brief list of reasons why we would make great guest conductors:
1. We love the Cubs. LOVE them. Just take a look at our website and you'll see that we are big time fans, who spend a lot of our free time on the Cubs. We're not in this to make money ('cause boy if we were we sure do suck at this) but rather to spread our love and opinions of the Cubs to fans around the world. And it has worked. Our listener numbers are incredible and growing with each cast. We get fan mail from around the world, lots of contest entries, and thanks from just about everyone out there (save our wives/girlfriends). We've actually turned down an advertising opportunity because the ticket brokering company who wanted to work with us wouldn't pay us in Cubs/Red Sox tickets. That's the type of fans we are.
2. We know the Cubs. We won't call Kerry Wood "Kerry Woods" or Wrigley Field, "Wrigley Stadium". We can actually pronounce every player's name on the 40-man roster…even relief pitcher Jon Leicester, or as we often affectionately refer to him as, Uncle Leicester. What did Derrek Lee hit against right-handed pitchers in April and May? .444. Okay, we looked that one up for this email.
3. We are funny and good at talking. That's right, we talk good. And we is funny.
4. We're unique, and of an interest to Cubs fans everywhere. Sure, we're not Bill Murray, but we're also not Kevin Sorbo. The thrill fans get from seeing a D level, non-Cubs fan celebrity interviewed and singing is fine, but what we offer is a gift that keeps on giving. We have listeners in every demographic, from all over the planet, who stay with us week after week. We're not just a new fangled draw for techno savvy nerds; we are on the forefront of a revolution in sports talk that is making waves in the world of entertainment. Already auto manufactures are installing devices to allow mp3 players to become standard equipment in cars, and one radio station is San Francisco has just switched to an all podcast format. A common theme we've heard from listeners is that with us they are guaranteed 15 or so minutes of quality, uninterrupted Cubs talk each cast. Turn on the radio and that's just not the case. Like WGN, we're able to reach out to Cubs fans all over the country, giving listeners another reason for remaining and becoming Cubs fans. Exposing fans to us and our site through the 7th inning stretch is a feel good opportunity to share a new form of media (or is it medium?) with Cubs fans everywhere.
So there you go, we love the Cubs, we know the Cubs, we're funny and interesting and able to talk at length about the Cubs and podcasting. We're the total package...and we'll pay our way there.
Best,
